Interview with Project Manager Mats Larsson - On SBEES and the challenges of electrification

We interviewed Mats Larsson, project manager of SBEES and author of several books on the energy transition. Here he shares his thoughts on the rapid transition to electric vehicles, why projects like SBEES are crucial, and how his experience will shape the success of the project.

What is the goal of the SBEES project, and why is it important right now?

The goal of SBEES is to develop services that can support the deployment of charging infrastructure and energy storage for electric vehicles. Right now, we are facing a rapid transition to electric transport, and it requires huge resources and careful planning to succeed. Our services will provide municipalities and businesses with the tools they need to plan for future energy needs.

How does SBEES build on your previous experience and networks?

I have been working on energy transition projects since 2005 and have written ten books on the challenges and opportunities we face. Over these years, I have built a network of experts and organisations that share my interest in electrification. Some of these are now partners in the SBEES project, giving us a strong foundation to build on.

What is the biggest challenge in moving to electric transport?

The biggest challenge is to create sufficient charging infrastructure and capacity in the electricity grids. This is a major investment and requires careful planning to ensure that we have capacity where it is needed. With SBEES, we hope to provide tools to help society address these challenges.

What do you hope SBEES will achieve in the next three years?

I hope that SBEES can contribute to a faster and more efficient deployment of charging infrastructure in the region, and that we can help our partners to get a clear picture of the needs. By providing our four services publicly, we can contribute to a sustainable transition to electrification for the whole region.
